Suffering eSpecial - 2 / 6 / 05 : Mukesh Chand Mathur... The Singer

Mukesh Chand Mathur... The Singer ...

Mukesh could breathe a thousand shades of despair and distill a lifetime of heartache in the few minutes it took to record a song. No other singer was capable of projecting emotions in their raw, unfurnished state the way he could. His was a voice that could on one hand be deeply melancholic and on the other hand exude a profoundly innocent and mellifluous sweetness. It was an exquisite blend of torment and anguish, tenderness and joy. To quote music maestro Salil Choudhury,

"Each word from his lips was a pearl. No one could sing the way Mukesh did with the right diction, inflexion and intonation. His vocal timbre was out of this world."

Mukesh Chand Mathur was born on the 22nd of July, 1923 in a small middle class family in Delhi. The first person to notice Mukesh from the Film Industry was the actor Motilal. A distant relative of the singer, he had attended Mukesh's sister's wedding in Delhi and was deeply impressed by the young man's voice. Motilal brought him to Bombay, kept him in his own house and arranged for Pandit Jaganath Prasad to groom him. Mukesh even did a Hindi Film during this period as hero, Nirdosh (1941) but it flopped miserably.

His first real break in films as a singer came in 1945 under the baton of Anil Biswas in the film Pehli Nazar (1945). The song was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne de picturized on Motilal! Though a huge hit, admittedly it sounded as if the young man was just another K.L. Saigal imitator.

It was under Naushad with Mela (1948) and particularly Andaaz (1949), that Mukesh finally discovered his own style. Andaaz (1949) was a major triumph for Mukesh. All his four solos were raging hits - Tu Kahe Agar, Jhoom Jhoom ke Naacho Aaj, Hum Aaj Kahin Dil Kho Baite, Toote na Dil Toote na. It is interesting to note that though Mukesh in later years was regarded as the voice of Raj Kapoor, in Andaaz, Mukesh's songs went on Dilip Kumar while Mohd. Rafi sang for Raj Kapoor.

The partnership with Raj Kapoor started with Aag (1948) where Raj's feelings of despondency and despair were vividly caught by Mukesh in Ram Ganguly's composition Zinda Hoon Is Tarah, and ended with R.D. Burman's Ek Din Bik Jaayega in the film Dharam Karam (1975). In its course was an endless list of hits. Among them are the evergreen songs of Awaara (1951), Shri 420 (1955), Parvarish (1958), Anadi (1959), Sangam (1964), Mera Naam Joker (1970).

The inimitable team of Mukesh-Raj Kapoor-Shankar-Jaikishen-Shailendra-Hasrat Jaipuri was responsible for producing one memorable hit after another for almost two and a half decades starting from Barsaat in 1949. From Mera Joota Hai Japani (Shree 420) to Kisi ki Muskurahaton pe ho Nissar (Anadi), from Dost, Dost na Raha (Sangam) to Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh Din (Mera Naam Joker), the emotions conveyed by the depth and intonation of the voice of this master-singer was unparalleled. ...

Suffering eSpecial - 25 / 6 / 05 : Remembering the Summer of 1983 ...

Remembering the Summer of 1983 ...

IN the history of Indian cricket, there are really only two competitors for the title of "greatest victory ever': the 1971 series win over England in England, and the defeat of the West Indies in the 1983 World Cup final.
# In 1971 England were arguably the best side in the world: they had just defeated the Australians Down Under, and not long before had got the better of Garfield Sobers' West Indians.
# In 1983 the West Indies were indisputably the best team in the world. They were winning Test matches against all-comers, and, as far as the limited overs game was concerned, had comfortably won the first two World Cups.

# I myself watched the 1983 World Cup final in a college common room in Calcutta.

When India batted first and were all out for 183 few gave us any hope. But then Gordon Greenidge shouldered arms to Balwinder Sandhu and was bowled, and a little later Desmond Haynes holed out to mid off. The great Vivian Richards came in and started ominously well. After his second boundary the television went on the blink. Doordarshan had lost its signal from London.

Some students, judging that the match was lost anyway, started wandering off. I, knowing both Doordarshan's ways and the uncertainties of the game, had a radio handy. I tuned the set to the BBC, in time to catch Richards getting out, caught by Kapil Dev at mid-wicket. Clive Lloyd limped to the crease, suffering from a pulled hamstring. Characteristically, he thought he would hit his way out of trouble. However, in attempting to loft Roger Binny through the off side, he failed to get to the pitch of the ball, and lobbed an easy catch to cover.

Not long after Lloyd's dismissal the signal returned. Hearing of the wickets that had fallen, wayward students started coming back. Malcolm Marshall batted bravely, but then a late outswinger from Mohinder Amarnath took the edge, and was held safely by Sunil Gavaskar at slip. By now there were close to 200 people in the room, to watch the last few wickets fall in a heap.

Not one Indian, in India, watched, "live", the moment that turned the match — Kapil Dev's catch to get rid of Richards. Later we saw clips of it. Buoyed by three boundaries in succession, Richards tried to hit a good length ball from Madan Lal through the on side. The ball caught the top part of the bat, but still soared high and beyond midwicket. The Indian captain sprinted back 20 yards to take the catch, smiling as he ran. The smile bespoke of an extraordinary self-confidence. For the swirling skier, for which you have to run behind your back, is one of the most difficult catches in cricket, not least when you are watched by 30,000 anxious pairs of eyes, and this is the final of the most important tournament in the world. But, the superb athlete that he is (or was), Kapil knew as soon as the shot was struck that he had his man.

'Floods Or No Floods ... Just Go On & On ... Must Float & Float!'

Guj flood: Train Passengers Save Themselves

AHMEDABAD, July 2: Nearly 400 passengers onboard the Shanti Express that was stranded in the flooded Dakor railway station for 36 hours, managed to reach to safety today, inspired by a man who braved the swirling waters to rescue his family stuck in the train.
The passengers of the Indore-Gandhinagar train and those stranded at the Dakor railway station mustered courage to cross the chest-deep water on seeing the man Rajesh Sheth who braved to rescue his family onboard the train even as the Army and Air Force could not evacuate anybody yesterday due to adverse weather.

Western Railway PRO Shailendra Kumar said that all the passengers were safe and most of them had been given temporary shelter at a make-shift camps nearby Dakor railway station.

Back in Ahmedabad from her ordeal of being stranded for more than two days at Dakor station, about 80 kms from here, with her teenaged daughter, Abha Sheth told PTI, "It is due to my husband Rajesh's conviction that we and nearly 60 others are back home safely. He drove all the way from Ahmedabad to Dakor in a Toyota Qualis through surging waters and rescued us".

Suffering eSpecial - 22 / 10 / 05 : Of Travels and Travails

The phrase 'going abroad' always conjures images of travelling to exotic places. For R. Bala it meant leaving his motherland for a country which was devoid of basic necessities such as salt and rice. But the drawbacks were soon cancelled out by the many merits of a city and a country that offered a wide variety of the bright and the beautiful.

Mr Bala soon grew accustomed to the contradictions that made up life in Zambia and the initial regrets melted away in the face of the benefits. Moreover, Tata Exports, the company he joined (now Tata International), was a big name.

Today, 23 years down the line, Mr Bala — chief executive officer of Tata Zambia, chairman of Global Compact, Zambia, and member of the board of directors of Taj Pamodzi — is happy with the turn his job and his life have taken.

"What I like most about the job," says Mr Bala, "is that I have grown into it. There is a tremendous amount of familiarity with the people and the business." The growth has come about in the face of numerous odds and constraints in the environment. Currently, Mr Bala's role involves planning, strategising to increase business from current customers, looking for new opportunities from potential customers and forecasting stock and people requirements, and ensuring that Tata Zambia stays within budget in a highly fluctuating environment. ...

Suffering eSpecial - 29 / 11 / 05 : Ragas for the Rain***** ...

CLASSIC DUET Hyderabad Brothers D. Seshachari and Raghavachari

The Department of Culture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, came up with a novel idea of welcoming the monsoons with a series of ragas associated with the season believed to hasten the rainfall, if there was a delay.

According to legends, Deekshitar, one among the musical trinity, was going to Ettayapuram. He saw people suffering from drought. On their request he prayed to the rain goddess Amriteswari, chanting Salilam Varshaya, Varshaya, Varshaya, following which there was a downpour. Fearing that the area might be drowned, he replaced that lyrics with Sthambhaya, Sthambhaya, Sthambhaya. And lo! The rain stopped. This incident was recorded in the book Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarshini written in 1919 by Subbarama Deekshtulu, his grandson.

The Blue Cross Of Hyderabad - Suffering Animal Rescues

Ill-treatment of animals is so common that it has almost become an accepted form of entertainment. People cheer on while a bear is whipped and made to salute them or dance.

This suffering is routine for circus animals and animals imprisoned by madaris on the street, but many pet-owners too take out their frustrations on their "pets". It is difficult to imagine that someone would choose to adopt a pet and then ill-treat it, but this is very common.

Some pet owners beat or starve their pets, tie them up in the sun without water, and commit a variety of other cruel acts. Neighbors who are unable to bear this cruelty report it to Blue Cross, and such animals are rescued.
