Workplace Blues

Is there anyone out there who's working in an atmosphere where people are not on the same mental wave-length? I mean, they are nice in their own way but since they don't belong to the same generation there's this huge gap. Its so frustrating.

yep me going thru the same situation. It gets quite difficult at times but now i have gotten quite used to it. Initially when i came here it was a big culture shock for me . Though i am working for the same org the style of functioning in bbay was quite diff compared to this place.Initially i tried to b a part of them but realised i used to b the odd person out.Our main prob was languauge. I dint really learn much telugu so dint get a hang of what they were discussing nor did they make any attempts to speak in hindi or english when we were in a group. they are nice people just that our wavelenghts too dint match. i have no one my age here so in off i hardly get to speak to anyone.In our org we have this prob of generation mismatch.Back in bbay though i never had this prob but here they find me very diff. but that definitely does not mean i change my way of thinking. I live life on my terms.worst is i live in the campus so i gotto c them even after office.

It was frustratign initially but now its just normal,y should anybody behavious disrupt my frame of mind. Do let me know how do u cope up with the situation at ur work place.

thats an age old problem...! generally whenever 2 telugus meet in a mixed group, they insist on talking only in telugu...India ho ya USA...! i have seen this in every company i worked in...thankfully i know telugu and dont feel left out in a crowd of telugus.

learn certain key :wink: words to catch a drift of what they r talking abt.

once upon a time, in the last century :!: when i was working in Delhi i faced a similar problem. the Punjus used to make fun of me and treat me 'differently' coz i was a Southie, and a 'Madrassi' to boot!

thankfully i have a nasty sense of humour and that helped me get back with my own barbs. good i didnt make any enemies coz once they saw i can hit back, that too in hindi, their attitude towards me changed.

boy...was i glad to be back in MY city - Hyderabad!

I think whatever you have said has more to do with attitude. On an average, one spends 70-80 % of the awake hours at work and its upto the individual themselves to make it as fulfilling as possible. The key is maintain a good work-life balance.

It's easy to blame it on your colleagues not being in your frequency or of a different age gap or say ones projects or task assignments being very boring or outdated and stuff. I could go on and on but I really suggest you read "Fish". Surely it would help. At least I did gain from it. Trust me.

I dont like some of the self help books if you know what i mean...But this guy puts things in a very simple easy to understand manner. He has them as 4 points. At the moment i can only remember 2.

1) Live in the present.

2) Make their day.

Hope this helps.

Be Happy!

by Happy Hyderabadi » Tue Apr 06, 2004 1:50 pm

In most of the cases, the best people do not get into the job or jobs ... Yet the common task that of the Team has to be completed. Some push, a few pull, others may drag, get on top of the others or just go ahead on their own. The following advice helps:

* Be Happy

* Be Helpful

* Be Keen to Learn

* Be Ready to Share Your Knowledge or Experience.

Cheerfulness helps!

You will say, "My Office is Shining"!

No, I'm not blaming my colleagues. I've categorically mentioned that they are nice people.

I guess I'm just vented out what came to my head and it didnt come out the way it was intended to be....

I've been going through phases wherein, I've been spending long hours at the workplace. I guess the problem stems from there. Too much of anything is bad and I guess thats whats happening in my life right now. My colleagues are not "my type". I know its ridiculous of me to expect the same. Its just that there are times when you long for ppl around u, who'll kind of understand your kind of humour/mental make-up. Not that I'm a complex person to deal with!!

I fully realise that its up to me to make the workplace a fun place. Like they say "I can make my life, heaven or hell". Its all in the mind. There's no bigger truism than that. Thanx anyway Mona. Will keep my eyes open for 'Fish'.

Happy Hyderabadi, your tips made me smile. :-) :-)

Thanx. Believe me when I say, that I've been complimented for my enthusiasm levels at the workplace. 'Keen to learn' Totally, totally agree on that one. Also, if I may add 'Be nice/kind'.

Hey MBabe, hope things get better there. I won't talk about how nice Hyderabadis can be coz u r probably till ur eye-balls with stuff like that!! :D
