To start a plan with a cell phone company in India, do you have to sign a years contract? What are the best plans they offer? How much do the phones cost?

Right now Im with Cricket. I was first a Verizon customer, they screwed me bad. I switched to Cingular Wireless, not satisfied with that either I switched to AT&T. Neither of them satisfied me competely. Then I discovered Cricket, which gives me unlimited local and long-distance free for 60 bucks a month. Im very happy with that.

Gimme the 411 on how the cell phone bizniz works in India. I'll need one when Im there.

You just need to have a GSM handset and you can get started with starter prepaid packs that range from 100 bucks to 900 bucks. GSM handsets cost anywhere between 3 to 30 grand. You can pick up one that suits your needs and pocket very easily.

As for the cellular service scenario in India, there are a lot of things happening - the industry is maturing and there's so much of change happening at the moment. So instead of getting a review now, get one just a week before coming over.

It will if it is GSM enabled. Your phone's user manual should tell you that.

ive read somewhere that US cell phones follow CDMA system. in that case your phone can be used only with certain operators like Reliance, Idea Mobitel.

GSM stands for global system for mobile communications! i think it started of in europe where it is hugely prevalent now... in US we have carriers using both CDMA and GSM.Tmobile uses GSM. sprint pcs uses CDMA.... alexis, does your phone have a sim card(u need to insert the card into the phone when you buy one). if you do then i guess its GSM...either way u can use your cellphone in india..both CDMA and GSM carriers are available.. :D

hope that helps

i've heard that mobile phones in the US have an in-built SIM card.. there's no slot for putting a Hutch or Airtel SIM in them.

so if you get your phone to india, it'll still have the US number built into it. i dunno how reliance would support the US provider (unless they have a tie-up)

Couldnt I get a new local number using my phone in India? I could always terminate my contract with the company before I come there.

no u dont have to terminate ur contract or anything... u'll have to test it for urself by bringing the fone over. and then go over to the reliance/idea office like rabbit suggested.

my cousin told me sometime back that US phones just cant be reconfigured for use anywhere else. keep ur fingers crossed!

ok, how can i see someone asking for help n not make myself available for assistance?!?! or atleast try to.. :)

Al looks like ur fone is one of the CDMA types which wont be of any use when u get it here.. the best thing to do is pick up a cellfone from here n use any of the sevice providers like Airtel or Hutch or.. whatever..

the handsets from the U.S/U.K are coded which can be broken here.. but it'll cost u a lil dough..

Thanks Az. Well, if its gonna cost me less than what it would for a new phone---Im up for it. Breaking the code would cost less than a new phone, right? I hope so, cuz I love my phone.

Its a picture phone, so when we have out meet, I can take as many as I want and save it on my phone.
