Highway to Hell

by Bimbette with a Brain » Sun Oct 19, 2003 12:04 am

I was riding home from work the other day and I nearly collided with another 2 wheeler. The reason? The bloke was trying to take a you turn on a flyover. Can\'t we all follow traffic rules? Why do we violate them so blatantly?

Lol. Yeah, thanks Kulcha, especially in a city like Hyderabad. Reams have been written on our poor traffic sense and I can\'t help bring it up again. The stretch from HPS Begumpet to Punjagutta is capable of driving anyone up the wall (pun unintended).

Remember \'Terminator\' where arnie is driving the truck? He is looking constantly to the sides (his head looked like a radar head). So when you are on the road don\'t just look straight ahead and keep your sensors on high alert. Saying prayers will also help...

Hi Bimettee with Brain,
In Hyderabad the trick for good driving is, \" You need to be very careful and ensure others are driving properly, especially autos and RTC guys. All the best, champion. Safe riding.

I am from Bangalore. The traffic rules are same in both Bangalore and Hyderbad. But the people here are different from Bangalore. Very few people follow traffic rules here. I wonder how people suddenly cross during the red light within a second. This is very bad. If the divider is of low height, pepole take U turns on the divider.

I would like to add a few personal comments on this subject. I find that people in our town have an amazing sense of judgement at un-manned crossings or passing through signals. I believe a German firm was hired to improve the traffic situation in Hyderabad. So they studied the traffic for few weeks and found that \'nothing better can be done as it is, whatever is happening seems amazingly working out\'. I have seen many times people criss-crossing/making U turns on the flyovers but there is a kind of calculated risk they are taking and it is working out fine. So, until you blend with the traffic you will not enjoy the ride in town. Personally, I drove in all parts of the world, and I don\'t find Hyderabad too bad though. Being a pakka Hydi myself. Cheers!!!

Hi Neeraja, like Kulcha put it, how can I ensure that Autowalas and the RTC bus drivers mind the rules? If each of us decides to follow rules, in our own small way, it will make a big difference. And b, people are taking calculated risks, but for how long will their luck hold out? I can think of so many instances, when motorists/scooterists have put other people\'s lives in jeopardy by taking these U turns.

It\'s weird, but I\'ve seen that each city has it\'s own brand of traffic chaos. For example, the Hyderabad traffic is different from the traffic in, say, Bangalore or Pune. But, if you think driving in these other cities is easier, it really isn\'t. People still flout the rules and do their own thing. It\'s just that they do it in a different way from us. So, wherever you go, there\'s going to be something in the traffic sense of the local junta that can be complained about. Bimbette, since you\'re the one who started this, here\'s a bit of a comaprative example for you: In Hyderabad, a green signal = go, and a red signal = stop, but try and nip across if you can. In Pune, a green signal = go, and a red signal = go. There\'s something good to be said about our system after all :)).

What we can do? Drive slowly and carefully to minimize the net impact and pray to God. Not while driving ;-).

Hyderabad traffic is special because we have the highest number of vehicles per kilometer of road in the country and to top it, we got the narrowest roads of all the six metros in India.

I read an article in \'frontline\' by a retired beauracrat (IAS officer) who lived in Mumbai during his service and visited all the major cities in India, and finally settled in Hyderabad. He says that Hyderabad has got the worst traffic culture! He was complaining about honking, and says people seem to honk even at road dividers in Hyderabad!
May the Fries be with you!
