Last night, our office boy called up to ask if any of us had AB+ blood. His uncle had met with an accident and blood was expensive. Since AB+ is a universal recipient, I went along with him. We went to OGH and it was a sorry sight. Low levels of sanitation and nobody cares. I had to wait for close to half an hour before the doctor came in.
The doc tells me that since its a complicated case, they wanted only AB+ blood and mine won't do. Haven't yet heard of a case where blood has been rejected on the basis of the group when the recipient had AB+. The blood banks that the doctor had referred were selling blood at 1000/- a bottle. And these naive people, totally unaware of what else could have been done had already spent close to 500 bucks going around on an auto looking for blood.
How insensitive and irresponsible was the doctor's role in the whole episode? And it doesn't stop there. We have the blood banks; charging such exorbitant amounts of money from innocent and ignorant people. What do they get out of it?
