The Piece Of Filth Called Deccan Chronicle

by The Stolen Mahout » Sun May 14, 2006 7:46 pm

I am writing about a piece that appeared in today's DC, on the last page of Hyderabad Chronicle, in the page "Party Whirl".

Kindly read this till the end. I have tried to make it readable.

Let's all do our bit for a girl maligned by a huge power she cannot fight back.

Deccan Chronicle wrote:Whine of the Day - Usha Bhagya

She called this morning and screamed, "I hear you are the cheap person responsible for that cheap write-up about my daughter. Where my daughter goes and what she does is no one's concern. And what do you mean by calling her an item?"

Ulta Chor Kotwal Ko Dante... We think Ms. Bhagya should instead thank us for the many things that are not written about her daughter.

Some of the things here are so obvious, it is an insult to the intelligence of people reading these forums to write them, but here goes anyways:

1. Deccan Chronicle has no right to write about where Usha Bhagya's daughter goes and what she does, as long as she is not committing any crimes, or abetting or spawning any.

2. A piece like this in a prominent place in a newspaper read by maybe a million locals is a huge blow to the respect of Usha Bhagya's daughter and her entire family, and for a lifetime.

The general public will forget it by tomorrow, but everyone who personally knows the girl in question, and who knows any other member of that family, will forever remember it.

Forget the crap about how it's been worded. The girl has been basically called a slut in the city's most powerful English medium, with absolutely no reason.

She has a friends' circle, perhaps colleagues at office if she works somewhere, relatives, neighbours, a world of her own. Similarly, her mother, her father, her siblings. She's been slandered forever. They've all been slandered forever. None of them will ever be able to completely get over this.

That write-up there was more powerful than a full page ad in the last page, in terms of how it's been positioned and highlighted.

If you are still not able to understand the magnitude, try imagining your own sister or daughter being written about there.

No really, stop for a bit. Spend some time doing this.

Now slowly think of all the implications for the girl's family and her life. Some projections:

a Think of her mother in every family/social setting henceforth. She's never sure what people are thinking and saying behind her, anytime for several months or years. She can never hold forth when she sees someone doing something wrong, for fear of how they will retort about she watching her own backyard first.

b. Think of her father in office everyday henceforth. He never knows what his colleagues or subordinates are thinking. Just the lowering of self-esteem that happens from thinking that people perhaps think your daughter sleeps around, is a punishment of a lifetime for a man. Nobody ever need actually say anything out in the open.

c. Think of the girl's own insecurity after she gets married. She perhaps has to bring this up with every prospective groom to avoid any misunderstandings later or him finding out from someone else, explaining the whole incident to him. Some will not understand. Some will, but just want to avoid anyone with a slur. And she has to constantly be apprehensive of if her husband will bring this up later in life in a fight.

Again, the important thing: all people associated with her will remember this forever, even if the general public forgets this tomorrow.

There will always be the feeling in the family's minds that perhaps the people they are interacting with are sniggering behind their backs, or pitying them. There will always be that insecurity simmering underneath. They can never be their self-respecting selves for a long time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not know what happened earlier, but from what I gather from the above and my general opinion of the IQ of the people who fill that last page in DC, basically this is what seems to have happened:

DC wrote some filth about a girl as it does about so many people, her mother exploded on the phone to them (she wouldn't deserve an iota of respect if she did not), and the editor at DC (I think someone called A T Jayanti) decided to put her in her place and show her who she was messing with. So she wrecked that family's reputation in 50 words, in a cheap and vulgar display of huge power.

I do not think the editor would have done it if she actually realized the implications for the girl and her family. The people at DC, alas, do not have that much intelligence. These are the people who actually defended their act saying they did not slander the girl more.

There is a poem in Telugu called "Kanakapu Simhasanamuna Sunakamunu Koorchundabetti". That is what DC today is. People with sub-zero IQ having access to too much power. People who use a respectable medium called journalism and a highly popular broadsheet to settle personal scores.

If there is a God, I hope He forgives them. The price to pay for wrecking a family's respect and a girl's reputation will be too much.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A REQUEST TO EVERYONE READING THIS

Let's help Usha Bhagya's family in the way you would hope for help if the same happened to you. Let us all rally behind them until DC publicly and unequivocally apologizes and pays damages.

Please do 2 things. Do not put these off for later - there is never a later, you will never return here.

1. Please forward this text to all your friends, and let them write to this address: jayanti@deccanmail.com. Let DC realize that people hit back when it misuses its clout.

2. Please vote in that poll above.

Please do these two right now. Please.

I am no relative or friend of the affected girl. I do not know any of them.

I am doing this simply since I know what it is like for a woman to be unfairly maligned. You never recover. You know people are thinking about it, but they will not discuss it, and you cannot bring it up. Sometimes a lifetime can pass by, and you'll never again know what it is like to have a self-esteem.

This woman's fate is a million times worse. The city's leading newspaper maligned her using prime space. Everybody turns to that page to see the photographs, and they slandered her in a highlighted box right in the middle.

Let's all do our bit for a girl maligned by a huge power she cannot fight back. I believe when we help someone in need, it comes back to us when we need it. And helping someone you do not know rates much higher.

Please forward this, and please vote now. You will never do it later.

If you can take time off and post here, even a sentence, we can make a brute come to its knees.

DC Obviously Sucks

by Aishwarya » Mon May 15, 2006 10:28 pm

Hey, I really appreciate the initiative taken. Other than forwarding the mails and posting on this thread, is there anything else that can be done?

It is high time that DC people are taught a lesson, esp that Jayanthi lady.

Is there anyway that a scanned version of the article can be put on this thread. I didnt get access to the article.

Piece of filth called Deccan Chronicle!

by BigDaddy » Tue May 16, 2006 6:42 pm

I think nobody has right to interfere with the privacy of an individual. What about the restaurant or the Pub where DC photographed the individual? Don't they have any policy to protect the privacy of its guests? I think the place which allows intrusion of a persons privacy is not worth to patronize. Shun such pubs/restaurants/bars,....

Give me a break...those places strive on papers like DC to survive. They get more publicity, ergo more customers, ergo more sales. The only places which preserves the privacy of its customers are very high end-exclusive-shit expensive joints, which do not exist in hyderabad.

I registered just with DC's e-paper version to read this.

Does that DC journalist even have a real degree in Journalism or Mass Communications? I wonder from which shop in Koti she bought her Journalism degree.

Another perspective!

by Aishwarya » Wed May 17, 2006 12:45 am

A person I respect immensely wrote this to me about the discussion board. We never agreed on most of the things, but I appreciate the way he thinks. So here it goes. Any takers for this:

_________________________________________________________

What prompted DC to single her out in the first place? Why was she the

odd-person out?

If she was, she was looking for attention and she got it - LOL. How,

why and what are secondary...

Newspapers - that's what they do and thrive on - all the attention and

readership. Don't want controversy? stay away from it....

Simply put - if she was such a party animal, you don't need a newspaper

article to make the parents and her feel the pain of the societal spin.

Society notices and it loves to. Its like - 'billi ankhen bandh kar

dudh peeti aur sochti, koyin nahi dekhrahahai mujhe....'

A simple retrospective 'why did it happen in the first place?' question

may be helpful.

Why do you blame the result ignoring the cause?

_________________________________________________________

My retort:

DC is a very mass type of newspaper. It has articles that pander

to mass's desires. Unlike Hindu which has exceptionally brilliant

articles with elegant English, DC has articles pertaining to

entertainment and local news. That is a brilliant marketting

strategy that DC uses, masaala over content, and therefore sells

more copies!

Coming back to the articale about this girl. Well, may be you are

right about the girl, may be she did like the attention that she

got. But the retaliation by DC to the girl's mother's reaction,

that was no at all dignified. To think that the Editor herself is

a women. Her mother called Ms Jayanthi (editor) over the fone and

expresssed her plight. That is a private converstion which

shouldnt have been made public. Jayanthi shuldnt have quoted the

conversation in the paper! Thats all...

_________________________________________________________

His response:

NEWS organizations seized to exist just as news carriers long time ago.

They are by all means media outlets that are biased one way or another

thereby appealing to different parts of the society.

Hindu might use elegant English, but it is no way un-biased. It just

appeals to a different set of people with a different kind of masala.

Market is not created by the media outlet - it is created by the

consumers. So, as long as there is a market there is no reason

to blame an outlet (just because you don't agree with its style). Just

know that there is a market out there different from your taste and

beware of it.

Coming to their reaction to her mother's call -

I bet that was probably not a polite conversation. She probably ticked

them off by yelling at them. In reality the conversation

should have started by acknowledging the problem with the girl. Then

ask them somehow to rectify the issue in the best interest of the girl.

Having said that, don't forget that we are talking about the same

organization in both the places. They were serving the same masala to

the

same set of people as they did by reporting the original issue, by

reporting on the follow-up conversation. Did you really expect anything

different

from them? She should have had the brains not to stir it more by

calling them. The more attention they give it the more devastating it

is to the girl's future.

Come to think of it, even if DC comes out with a front page apology and

fires the editor - the worse it gets to the girl's future. I can

guarantee you that it will

Not be the last time it happens with DC.

If there is one thing I agree with - it is the quote that they used

equating themselves to 'kotwal'.

Somehow they thought that they were enforcing values in the society.

That was laughable!

__________________________________________________________

My response:

That is a nice perspective.. but I guess we have conflict of

ideaologies here... I will never agree with that. What Jayanthi

did was a vulgar display of her power... She couldve handled the

whole thing in a dignified way. There was no need for her to react

the way she did. This lady's (gilr's mother) reaction seems

atleast justified!

____________________________________________________________

His response:

LoL - Are we getting too conclusive here?

Go back along the chain of events - you'll find everything justified in its own respect.

Moreover, we really don't have a clue on how that conversation started or proceeded.

For all we know, the mother called and started giving ultimatums citing contacts or something like that.

So, handling it more in a dignified way may also apply to the mom.

Especially where there is something to be fixed on her end.

Note: Remember that the world says a lot of things. You cannot be peeved at each of them.

Simple but true - Change starts from with-in.......

This is not the first time this whore of a newspaper called DC has engaged in sensationalizing news , it will just publish any news the way the Hindutva elements in its ranks want it to be , completely fabricated stories are published without any accountability whatsoever, I stopped reading it longtime back when it started to cater to the Hindutva(Fundmentalist Hindu) ideology, its only good for the Vegetable vendors now , especially the friday edition with the nude picture .. is it still there

It was only when her daughter was called an ITEM, Mrs.Bhagya Latha had a problem. I am sure the girl in question loved being photographed and splashed on P3 till last Friday.
