Flyovers in the city are useless

by peeping tom » Sun Aug 17, 2003 9:34 pm

I got a shock after reading a Times of India article today, saying that the city\'s flyovers are not serving their purpose. I then got a double shock with Mr. Naidu\'s statement accepting this. Is it true?

Mr. Naidu is probably interested in investing in subways and later he will say,\"subways are useless\" when he wants to invest in something else. ;-)

Flyovers in the city are useless

This is not shocking. It is true that, out of 10, most of them are useless. take the case of Ameeerpet to Sec\'bad... 4 flyovers, and only 1 is necessary truly speaking. Flyovers meant for controlling traffic as in Chennai or B\'lore, not for just show, isn\'t it? Take the Tank bund flyover and Narayanaguda flyover, you might understood. Actually, there is lot of crowd and traffic from Panjagutta to SR nagar and no flyovers there.

Mr. Naidu, u have an opportunity here, demolish old ones that are useless and build new ones. This is a perennial opportunity for Mr. Naidu and collegues. Make them, get it wrong and break and make them again.............long live the ability to make and break.

Flyovers in the city are useless

by Rajesh » Mon Aug 18, 2003 9:07 pm

Well, nobody is trying to understand the amount of effort that the CM is putting to bring up the city. Flyovers are just a small part. Aren\'t the roads being widened. Again on this issue, some may say that shops, are being demolished for road widening, which is wrong, bla... bla.....
Maybe, some of the flyovers wont b able to serve the purpose to the expected levels. But definitely they r useful. As citizens, we too have some responsibility to understand him and try to appreciate him. When the entire world is appreciating his work and even giving him awards/degrees(which he rejected of course), we are sitting here, quite close to him and then saying as we like. Can u get a better CM? Of course this board is not meant for discussion on CM. But since some of the people has dragged him into this controversy, I am responding.

Flyovers in the city are useless

Rajesh,You are both right and wrong. Flyovers are definitely needed, but not in place where they are being built. The one at Secretariat, Masab tank are examples of poor planning. They are not need in the first place, and after they are constructed, they have become a major bottleneck for traffice.
Flyovers are needed in place like Nalgonda X roads(where two major two lane roads merge into one single narrow lane towards chadergat) and the other at Panjagutta X roads. There are major technological and planning challenges to the projects and though they are part of the original 17 flyovers plan for the city, failed to take off even after the soil sampling.
Regarding the road widening, the less we talk abt it the better. Many road side houses and shops were demolished for widening the roads [without the occupants being relocated] and the roads were not constructed or expanded. Now people have begun encroaching the roads.

Flyovers in the city are useless

Our CM plans for today, implements tomorrow and decides that it is useless the day after. Lets take the education system, he wants to eliminate arts courses coz there is no demand for arts people in jobs--- now-a-days. O:)

Flyovers in the city are useless

by naireddy » Wed Aug 20, 2003 5:15 pm

Mr. Naidu is doing nothing about what is actually needed. Leave the flyovers. Anyway those are useless, except for one or two. Take the case of MMTS. What is the use of this, Actually it is meant to minimise traffic or save time of travel and to control the pollution, like metro\'s, MMTS, doesn\'t cover single traffic area, e.g Ameerpet. MMTS is just for show, not actually needed. Comments...

Flyovers in the city are useless

There should be no double shocks at all. It is true that, out of 10 most of them are very very useless, isn\'t it?
Take the case of ameeerpet to Secunderabad. 4 flyovers! Only 1 is neecessary truly speaking. The rest are all a waste. Flyovers are meant for controlling traffic, not for show. One more thing. Take the Tankbund flyover and the Narayanaguda flyover, you might understand. Actually, there is lot of croud and traffic from Panjagutta to S.R. Nagar. No flyovers there. This means flyovers are there for just show, not really to control traffic, as in Chennai or B\'lore.

It was planned to construct a flyover at punjagutta and Nalgonda X roads, but there are serious bottlenecks for the two projects. First and most important is how will u manage the traffic during the construction phase? There is no alternative route and the existing roads are not wide enough to handle the traffic. If this problem can be solved then the construction will begin.

Flyovers in the city are useless

by Soumya Sarkar » Tue Aug 26, 2003 10:41 am

Ask yourself... What is a flyover? An elevated road that flies over another so that they do not cross. The ones in Hyderabad are flyalongs, i.e. they fly along the same road they are supposed not to cross and ultimately join them.
Simply speaking, if there are 100 vehicles before a flyover in Hyderabad, 50 take the flyover and 50 the road. But when the flyover ends we again have 100 on the road. True flyovers do not work on this concept.

Flyovers in the city are useless

by Rambabu Potluri » Tue Aug 26, 2003 10:57 pm

It was a forgone conclusion that the flyovers would be useless but then who would accept it? Our CM is the darling of the crooked businessmen, political prostitutes and the willing prostitutes from the press who sell themselves faster than the cheapest whore.
After visiting China, Japan and Singapore, our Hitech CM said that the flyovers should not be built the way they have been built but should be built as in the above three countries. Well, who will tell our Great CM that you need not visit these countries to know how to build flyovers? One can sit in front of the TV and watch Discovery Channel and you will know how flyovers have to be designed and built for optimum utilisation.
