Useless Traffic Signals

by Ravi » Thu Dec 18, 2003 1:29 pm

While there is a great need for many traffic signals (i dont mean just the lights) in our city, there are so many unnecessary and meaningless signals which no one notices. Why dont the cops/MCH remove these boards or place them in a significant place where people actually notice them? Those who dwell in Hyderabad, please list any and all such signals, boards you find on this board (no pun here) and I will collate them and send it to MCH/Police once a week. The idea is to give simple things to be done by MCH or police like removing a signboard and not complex tasks like build a flyover etc. One task per day per person should be good enough. So keep your eyes open on the way to work and give the MCH and traffic police some work. Lets see if things move!

Its funny to spot some signs while driving in our beautiful city. Like the No Overtaking symbol when we are getting on to Khairatabad flyover from NTR Marg. Pointless. What do they mean dont overtake?

It is dangerous to overtake on a flyover. It may result in accidents at high speeds, especially on a curve (Khairtabad flyover doesnt have any banking, IIRC). But during peak times, the traffic moves slowly and the \'No overtake\' sign doesnt mean anything.
Every sign has some purpose. Its for our own safety. Its just that we dont know what the sign boards mean and we tend to think that Traffic cops are fools to put up such sign boards. If Driving sense is imparted to all license holders, then every sign board makes sense. Ofcourse there are always some useless sign boards, mostly due to negligence on part of Traffic cops.

The I guess it has to be moved to some place where people notice it - and also add a slow down signal or something indicating the curve etc. I will take note of that.

Hey Mayavi,
Why do you get so upset with everyone. Did you see yourself flouting traffic rules and shout at yourself or just pardoned yourself with some excuse giving all the reasons in the world why you could not follow a rule? I agree cops are doing or atleast trying. But that does not mean we have no right to show the mistakes happening and ask for corrections to be done. If things go as you say - we should say the MCH knows very well why a certain ditch was dug up and you better shut up and wait till they finish their work and clear up the place. There are major resource - both physical and intelligence resource - constraints in our govt departments and I think it will definitely help if the citizens do a little bit of the monitoring and reporting to the departments.

I dont think my post has indicated any frustration. I was explaining the need for sign boards, which most Hyderabadis dont know, me included. If there are any redundant signals, then we should point it out, like what ravi is planning to do. But that doesnt mean that we should doubt the intelligence of our city traffic planners. So when some one doesnt understand the importance of a \'No overtake\' sign on a flyover, then I feel its my duty to explain its importance.
BTW, if I had to shout, I will use CAPS. Using capital letters is equivalent to shouting on internet fora.
