Schools or Something else?

by Jekyll and Hyde\'rabadi\' » Sun Nov 02, 2003 12:03 am

A friend\'s cousin is a student of Oakridge. She was telling me that students are served burgers/pizzas in the breaks, with Pepsi/Coke not being too far behind. Their classrooms and buses are air-conditioned, with cartoon network being shown on the in-house TVs of the buses.

It all sounded so bizzare to me. Impressionable minds that are being nourished in an environment like this. The kids will grow up to be class-conscious/status conscious from a very young age, don\'t u think? Aren\'t schools like these doing a (dis)service to society? Opinions please.

physical health will the worst hit for these kids, if only the food was of a better choice !! The whole lot of guys out there are turning away from such food and we are makeing a grab at them ! that too with the kids !! whoa !! and.. wil make them class consious and in turn will make them somebody not belonging in the regular social circle, the same ways as those of the children who return from other countries feel and will make adjustments later for a better social life. better is to be one among the whole lot.

food is sure a problem, but y are u talking of AC and TV in buses. u want people to be squeezed in an auto rickshaw and kids to learn in a school with power-cuts. This is called quality of living. better quality of living and thats the reason people are lining up to leave India.

if that is why u left INDIA.. its a pity.. instead of trying to make a difference if not in action atleast in THOUGHT... u ridicule ur motherland and go away for the so called BETTER QUALITY OF LIVING... its cuz of people like u that some people who really wanna serve their mother country and go abroad just for the oppurtunities but still back in their mind they love their homeland, are being criticised.... its a pity my frnd

Hi jeklly,,

Some big wigs who dont know how to spend the money want it that way, because of such wigs, such type of schools are operating.. let few parents raise their opinion there will be a good change.. on the contarary the parents feel so proud that their children are fed with pizas, burgers, pepis.. A/c bus.. Cartoon in the bus,, children are highly pampered in the name of sofistication,, God bless them.....

Johnny, I dont think ZC ever criticized India in his post. He is criticizing those who equate good quality of life to unnecessary spending on pomp.
Agreed that AC bus and Cartoon Network are not necessary for education, but whats wrong if they have it? The school is definitely not asking every parent in the city to pay up for its school. Only those who can afford it join their kids in those schools. I donot know if AC buses and cartoon network reduce the quality of education and hamper creativity of the kids. If so, then it very bad.

well Johnny, y people left India and y they ar eleaving, or whether they are patriotic or not has been discussed in these boards sometime back. i want to ask u one question however. How many of ur family/relatives/friends are abroad? y dont u give ur fundas to them instead of giving them to a fictitious character ZC over the internet ?

Well mr fictious ZC, yea i do agree i have quite a few relatives abroad.. but the point here is not whether u r goin abroad or not..? the whole point here is the thought atleast shudnot be anti-indian as in ridiculing it. Well may be there are not as much facilities as u get abroad.. but what do u do if ur house is dirty? u will clean it up wont u? u wont shift to another house... right? and most of my relatives ( exceptions always exist) went abroad for the sake of oppurtunities and just imagine the monetary gain india wud be gettin as a result of dollar inflow into the country to their respective families.... in a way they r helping india too... but in morality they atleast dont ridicule india ever... infact most of them have expressed their will to return back to india after they r well off..
anyways.. this discussion is deviating from the topic of this board.. sorry to all who are buggedb y this.. chaloz.. see ya

No, I\'m not saying kids should be packed like sardines in an auto or should sweat it out in class, ZC. When every whim of the kid is catered to, u r not bringing up healthy (not literally) individuals. U and I went to schools where there was a mix of people. Some filthy rich, some middle class and some not-so-well-off financially. We\'ve learnt to accept and adjust with ppl, from different stratas, because we were all part of a \'mixed-bag\' environment.

In these elitist schools, u\'ll only have the rich, the richer and the richest. 14 yrs in a school like that, will make a difference in the outlook of a kid, don\'t u think? Will it be smooth sailing when the kid interacts with ppl from the real world ? There\'s a good chance that these students will grow up completely indifferent to those who aren\'t like them, simply bcoz they haven\'t seen the other side of a life where u don\'t get everything. Or it may also make them a tad condescending towards other ppl.

In my limited scheme of things, thats how I see it.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

first, i am not saying anything against India. now, its not the elite people who go to school with AC classes. In India middle class wont use AC that doesnt mean people elsewhere dont use it, take china for example, number of ACs per 100 people in China is more than that in India. When such schools are in developed countries in USA and Europe and everyone goes to a school with central AC/heating system, whats wrong ? u want to start a school with no AC ?

Oakridge

by Reddy » Thu Feb 26, 2004 7:25 am

I think the school is geared above the regular schools in Hyd. It gives the children a comfortable atmosphere (everyone wants to sit ina A/C cinema

right!) . This costs extra, but if one can afford what's wrong in providing and

enjoying it. If the kids become snobby, then it is the parents who should

descipline them

A/C and cartoon network is no harm. atleast they are not screening MTV or FTV for the children!

but the serving of Burgers n Pizzas is shocking. Is the school administration illiterate or a dumb ass? I think the parents of the unfortunate kids are worse than the administrators...for keeping quiet about this.

A daily diet of pizza and burgers is the right diet to kill the children with excessive cholestrol. And add soft drinks to that...the perfect recepie for a generation of fat lazy kids with a timebomb ticking in their hearts.

(mal)nutrition apart, i happened to meet some kids from one of the numerous "international" schools here. they were laughing and making jokes on kids from other schools who travel by ordinary school busses and autos. they were also pointing and laughing at street children.

it was just like what Jekyll bhai said in his post - about the snobbery and indifferent attitude of these kids. itys not just their parents fault. even the schools are equally responsible.

Reddy, the point is not whether they should be allowed to grow up in classrooms that have Air-cons. Its just that I think, that education is not the same in an environment that has all the trappings of 'a good life'. Wholistic education (heck! I sound like one of the nuns at my ex-college! :) ) is all about growing up in an environment that is closer to reality and that gives u a chance to interact with ppl from all stratas.

But then like u said if u think schools like these are giving u ur money's worth, for ur kid, then to each his/her own.

Oakridge school overall

by Reddy » Thu Mar 04, 2004 12:57 am

HYD summer is terrible. I hope the A/C everywhere is not the issue.

Regarding food One could always send box lunch.

Heckling at other kids etc.. not good.. parents to should deal ..

Also unfortunately it is our society and culture that has built in

these levels of rich/poor complexes from which the children do

grasp and imitate the elders.

BTY, how good is the school? Anyone who knows more about it pl. post

your experiences with teachers and general info ..

Heard a lot about it. I am an NRI considering it for my kids.

Pl. help, any feedback is appreciated ... THX

Is this PIZZA one day a week or everyday event? That is the question.

If it is once a week or two weeks then I am all for it ... :P :P

hey! even i love pizzas, but draw a line at consuming em frequently (and i never touch soft drinks).

however tast pizzas or burgers might be, we cannot ignore the fact that they are unhealthy and have no nutrition value.

what school kids need is nutritious food like wholesome sandwiches, milk, fruit juices, cereals and salads. no school should serve junk food and carbonated soft drinks....not even once a week.
